City Guide

Chennai is the capital of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the fourth largest metropolis of India, after New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. It is a seaside (and a major port) city situated along the second largest beach in the world, the Marina Beach. The weather in Chennai is warm and humid for most of the year.

Chennai is connected to all major cities in India by air and its rail and road network make the tiniest village easily accessible by comfortable trains and deluxe buses. Chennai's economy has a broad industrial base in the automobile, technology, hardware manufacturing, and healthcare industries. The city is home to much of India's automobile industry and is the country's second-largest exporter of software, information technology and information-technology-enabled services (ITES), second only to Bengaluru. The city is also a wind turbine manufacturing hub with the presence of some major national and international wind turbine manufacturers.

Chennai boasts of a rich cultural heritage and has many monuments and temples. Mahabalipuram, Kanchipuram and Thanjavur are examples of some famous temple towns. While Mahabalipuram, with its wealth of sculptures, is famous for its exotic seaside resorts, Kanchipuram, also called Kanjeevaram, is famous for its lustrous silk sarees. Likewise, Thanjavur is an important centre for bronze figure casting. The city has a vibrant theatre scene and is an important centre for Bharatanatyam, a renowned classical dance form.
